Mile High Salsa Festival

The Mile High Salsa Festival is a two week series of events that culminates with the Colorado Salsa Open(CSO) on June 5th, 2010 at the Turnverein Cultural Center. Strictly Salsa is a series of qualifying events at selected area night clubs starting two weeks prior with the final competition at the CSO. Also featured this year are a series of innovate dance classes taught by area Salsa and Ballroom instructors.

Strictly SalsaQualifier Competitions

Qualifying events for the Strictly Salsa category will take place at area night clubs. Two winning couples from each club (12 couple's total) will compete at the final competition in the Colorado Salsa Open June 5th, 2010.

Strictly Salsa Night Club Schedule

  • May 20  Avalon
  • May 25  Rio
  • May 27 La Rumba
  • May 28 Blue Ice
  • May 30 D-Note
  • June 2  Turnverein Cultural Center
  • Each of the twelve advancing couples will be required to pay a non-refundable $20 entry fee on the night they are selected to advanceto the final Strictly Salsa competition at the CSO. The $20 per couple fee includes entrance into the CSO on June 5th. If a couple decides not to advance to the CSO on June 5th a runner up couple will be substituted. Additional runners up could also be selected from previous competitions held at area night clubs.

    Strictly Salsa Qualifier CompetitionNight Club Procedure

  • Instructor (s) runs each event with the help from SCD volunteers.
  • Couples are invited to the dance floor.
  • Instructor explains the rules.
  • Couples dance for 2 minutes (DJ selects music).
  • Four couples are selected by judges supplied by Salsa Central Denver. 
  • Four couples dance again for 1-1/2 minutes (DJ selects music).
  • The audience by applause selects 2 couples as winners and the other 2 couples are considered runners-up.
  • The 2 winning couples are invited to advance to the final StrictlySalsa competition at the Colorado SalsaOpen on June 5th, 2010. Runners up and couples not selected may compete as many times as they like at other night club venues until they are selected as winners leading up to the final Strictly Salsa competition at theColorado Salsa Openon June 5th, 2010.
  • Winning couples will receive a gift certificate from the sponsoring night club.
  • Strictly Salsa CSO Finals Competition Procedure

    First round:

  • Twelve couples that qualified at prior night club competitions are invited to the dance floor.
  • MC explains the rules.
  • Couples dance for 2 minutes (DJ selects music).
  • Judges select the top six couples to advance to the next round.
  • Final Round:

  • Remaining top six couples from round one are invited to the dance floor.
  • Couples dance for 1-1/2 minutes (DJ selects music).
  • Judges select 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners.
  • STRICTLY SALSA WINNERS GET CASH AND CERTIFICATES

    1ST PLACE: $100 ($50 per person)

    2ND & 3RD PLACE: GIFT CERTIFICATES

    What is Strictly Salsa?

    In Strictly Salsa, competitors pre-select their partners and have most likely danced together prior to the competition. They are encouraged to 'lightly' choreograph a routine to show off some of their best moves, but the danceshould focus mostly on improvisational partnering. No supported tricks,lifts or drops are allowed. Music will be selected by the DJ and all competitors will dance together as a group.

    RULES: (Preliminary Qualifier & Final Competitions)

  • Entrees must register as a couple.
  • Music is provided by the DJ.
  • No supported tricks, lifts or drops.
  • Both people need to keep one foot on the floor at all times.
  • Costumes are allowed but not required.
  • 70% of the dance must be with the partners being connected. Some free-style allowed, but more emphasis will be placed on leading and following.
  • Rhythm, musicality, timing, connection, balance, footwork, and Latin Body Motion are the primary judging criteria.
